Possibly a crack on the screen based on how much damage the shield or suits have.

Maybe a scan line moving upwards slowly. Or some way to create TV static By changing the image overlay quickly.

Remove the left side bar text and replace with icons. Top bar could also be icons. Or somehow using an event to jump several squares. And change the cursor graphic to be the full width of said tab.
